Antennas for Small Satellites

Background and Challenges of the Request

Development of a wideband medium-gain antenna and a low-elevation directional antenna to simplify satellite attitude control for satellite communications using the X-band

In addition to being compact and lightweight, they must also withstand the harsh, space-specific environments such as vibration, temperature, and radiation.

Key Points for Proposals and Design

A low-elevation directional antenna proposes a helical structure with a peak at 30° elevation. By suppressing gain in the zenith direction, it is considered to contribute to simplifying attitude control.

The medium-gain antenna employs a 4-element patch array structure to achieve both compact size and high performance.

Development and Achievements

The medium-gain antenna measures 70mm square, 10mm thick, and weighs approximately 70g.

The low-elevation antenna has been miniaturized to a diameter of 70 mm, a height of 35 mm, and a weight of approximately 150 g. 
The latter achieves approximately 4 dBi gain at an elevation angle of 30°. This design ensures stable operation even under harsh environmental conditions.

As the low-elevation-angle directional antennas need to have special electrical characteristics, we used an electromagnetic field simulator for development. We found it very rewarding because we developed antennas to be installed on satellites that will travel into space.
